Gratitude Report FY22

Dear Friends,

As state lawmakers across the country continue to strip away bodily autonomy with abortion-bans and attack the LGBTQ+ community – especially transgender people – with discriminatory laws, I could not be more proud to be at helm of the largest Planned Parenthood affiliate in the country.

Planned Parenthood Mar Monte, your local Planned Parenthood, has a long history of providing the highest quality health care – including abortion and gender affirming care – to anyone who needs it. Full stop.

We have a lot of accomplishments to share in this report that we couldn’t have achieved without the support of our board, community partners, volunteers, legislators, patients, staff, and donors, including you.

Our staff and board just prepared a robust strategic plan and principles that will guide PPMM during the next three years. Building upon a period of operational and organizational renewal, PPMM has introduced innovative services and strengthened our systems, processes, and abilities to meet the needs of our communities. We are well-prepared to meet the moment, as we have so many times before.

With you by our side, PPMM is stronger than ever and ready to advance the forefront of sexual and reproductive health – and rights.

Together, we move forward!

Stacy Cross
PPMM President & CEO

In the year since Roe v. Wade was overturned, you and your neighbors have helped Planned Parenthood Mar Monte provide essential abortion care, including for those who travel to our service region from abortion-ban states.

In the past fiscal year, July 2022 to June 2023, PPMM provided more than 67,000 patients with $12,971,567 in uncompensated care — this is possible thanks to gifts like yours that support people who are uninsured or under-insured.

But that’s only the beginning.

We have also returned to our pre-pandemic work, on the vanguard of improving public health outcomes, not only for our patients but for those throughout California, while also breaking ground on a larger health center in Reno.

Highlights

Post-Roe abortion care management
We have trained even more clinicians to provide abortion at times and locations that meet patients where they are.

Prenatal program in Fresno
We have launched a fast-growing prenatal care program at our Vera Broder Silberstein Family First health center in Fresno, including prenatal care counseling.

New medical research to benefit our patients
PPMM is participating in three medical research projects, including one with the University of Utah that could change Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines for the hormonal IUD.

We are also partnering with the University of California, San Francisco on a study that may result in easier access to medication abortion, and we’re collaborating with Stanford University on a study that could provide patients with alternatives to sedation during on-site abortions.

New health center opening in Nevada
PPMM began construction on a new health center in Reno with many more exam rooms that will allow us to expand abortion care from medication abortion to providing procedural abortions as well.

What our students are saying:

These lessons were a big help in figuring out more about how to have and keep a relationship healthy.

It’s taught in a well-rounded and more scientific manner than other lessons.

It was the first time I felt included in a sex ed class as a trans person.

The quizzes and short videos made this course a lot more interesting and engaging.

We continued to increase sex ed access in FY23 through comprehensive Digital Learning e-courses, designed by and for youth, for middle and high school students — bringing this group’s enrollment to 16,912, double over FY22.

Through our federally funded Sex Ed Equity project, we rolled out new evidence-based programs for youth involved in social services and justice systems in Tulare, Kern, Monterey, and San Joaquin counties.

We also expanded our portfolio of innovative young parent, special education, and youth development programs.

  • 81,689 estimated people were reached via PPMM outreach kits, including sex ed info and birth-control barrier methods, distributed by 65 community partners in 17 counties in California and Nevada
  • 35,597 youth and adults were reached with online sex ed via PPMM Education content partnerships
  • 16,912 comprehensive sex ed students enrolled in PPMM Digital Learning middle school and high school e-courses (Spanish and English)
  • 3,693 people received sex ed and info from PPMM high school peer educators and Spanish-speaking adult volunteers (promotores)
  • 224 young parents received comprehensive case management, positive youth development coaching, and resource navigation to support their parenting and educational goals

Standing up by showing up

Standing up for our patients means PPMM showing up for them at legislative hearings, school board meetings, community organizations, and college campuses.

PPMM’s Public Affairs team has worked tirelessly, advocating and organizing to engage our champions and effect change on a local, state, and national level so that our patients and communities have the health care they deserve.

California

Select 2023 reproductive freedom bills, co-sponsored by PPMM, that should be on Gov. Gavin Newsom’s desk this fall:

SB 487: Protects reproductive health care providers from adverse actions as the result of another state’s law restricting comprehensive sexual and reproductive health care.

AB 352: Enhances privacy protections for patients who access sensitive health care services in California by ensuring critical health information is not automatically shared with other states.

Nevada

The 2023 Nevada Legislative Session racked up some spectacular wins for PPMM-sponsored legislation.

Select 2023 bills, co-sponsored by PPMM, passed by Nevada legislature:

SJR7: Resolution codifying the right to reproductive freedom in the state’s constitution. The resolution must pass again in the 2025 legislative session to appear on the 2026 ballot.

SB 131: Codifies a 2022 executive order protecting abortion providers and out-of-state patients from prosecution by antiabortion state governments for care received in Nevada.

SB 163: Insurance coverage for gender-affirming care.

AB 383: Protections for access to birth control, expands required coverage for birth control under the State Plan for Medicaid.

The Nevadans for Reproductive Freedom Coalition, which includes Planned Parenthood Votes Nevada, NARAL Pro-Choice Nevada, and the ACLU of Nevada, filed a petition initiative to put the right to reproductive freedom on the ballot for Nevadans in 2024.

The Nevada legislature meets during odd-numbered years and will not be in session in 2024.

Thank you for giving your time

Our communities are grateful that you help protect access to sexual and reproductive health and education. Here are some of the ways you and your neighbors showed up for us this year.

You weren’t afraid to put boots on the ground. This has been the first year since 2020 with more in-person volunteer hours than virtual! We loved seeing everyone come out to events like our annual Capitol Day lobbying event in Sacramento, a unique opportunity for supporters and staff to participate in the legislative process.

Folks also made time to take part in our in-person donor events and a special virtual event where they got to hear from former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder and Director of Politics & Government Affairs for Gen-Z for Change Olivia Julianna.

We strongly believe that where you live and how much money you have shouldn’t be obstacles to getting safe, affordable health care. This year, our supporters had countless ways to take action and contribute to the cause. If you haven’t already, sign up to volunteer at ppmarmonte.org/volunteer.

On the last day of May this year, PPMM and our patients lost one of our greatest friends and champions, Eva Grove. As cofounder of the Grove Foundation, Eva’s brand of philanthropy was much like the woman herself — wise, rooted in the American immigrant experience, and very direct.

“Her story as an immigrant who came here with almost nothing always made her want to give people help when they needed it and do it in the most practical way,” Eva’s daughter, longtime PPMM board member and past board chair, Karen Grove said.

Karen also said that, over the decades, Eva volunteered in Planned Parenthood health centers creating a new filing system, supporting patients, and knocking on voters’ doors at election time.

Since 1980, Eva and the Grove Foundation — which she co-founded with her late husband, Andy Grove — have given more than $20 million to PPMM, creating a legacy that has been transformative for the communities we serve.

PPMM President & CEO Stacy Cross said the initiative was a hallmark of her philanthropy: “Eva was such an incredible supporter of PPMM’s and was always there as a go-to person for anything we needed. Because of all she did and stood for, she was — and will continue to be — revered and respected by PPMM.”

PPMM is eternally grateful for the magnificent support of Eva Grove.

One Year After Dobbs

June 24, 2022 – the day of the Dobbs decision – marks a cruel and unjust return to a ban on our bodies that we thought had been banished a half-century ago.

We know the ability to get safe, legal abortion in the U.S. is still determined by where you live and how much money you have. And due to systemic racism and discrimination, the worst of these bans continue to be shouldered by millions of people of color, immigrants, people living with low incomes, and people in rural areas.

Here at PPMM, we are focusing on the strength we have found during this period of extreme adversity. We have been buoyed by the unity we have felt with colleagues, supporters, legislators, volunteers, and donors, like you, to ensure that anyone who needs abortion care at one of our health centers can receive it.

Roe v. Wade was just the floor for what abortion access should be — we always needed more. We will continue to work toward a future where our reproductive freedoms are no longer up for debate.
